A step-by-step routine for rinsing salt water, removing sand, and drying your Harbormaster 2N1 shorts so the shell and liner stay comfortable for the next swim.
Quick answer
Rinse your Harbormaster 2N1 shorts in cool fresh water as soon as you leave the beach, work out sand before it dries, and air-dry them fully inside and out before packing them away.
Why the liner needs its own attention
The DropTemp® Cooling Hydro Mesh liner sits against your skin, so salt, sand, and sunscreen collect there even when the quick-dry shell feels clean. Rinsing only the outside leaves that layer gritty and stiff. Turn the shorts inside out and flush the liner separately so the mesh stays breathable and comfortable.
What to skip when you are in a hurry
Hot water, chlorine bleach, and high dryer heat are the usual shortcuts, and each one works against the fabrics. If you cannot rinse immediately, shake out sand and soak the shorts in cool water later the same day. A short delay is fine; leaving salt and sand packed in a bag overnight is not.
Step-by-step care after salt and sand
- Shake and brush off dry sand first: Before you rinse, shake the shorts and brush sand off the shell and liner with your hand or a soft brush. Rinsing first turns loose sand into a gritty paste that works deeper into the mesh. Do this at the beach, before the shorts go into a bag.
- Rinse in cool fresh water: Turn the shorts inside out and rinse the shell and liner under cool running water until the water runs clear. Pay attention to the waistband and leg openings where salt collects. Skip hot water; it is not needed and is harsher on stretch fabrics.
- Wash with a small amount of mild detergent: If the shorts still feel stiff or smell of sunscreen, wash them by hand or on a gentle cycle in cool water with a small amount of mild detergent. Do not use chlorine bleach or fabric softener. Check the care label inside your pair before machine washing.
- Rinse out all detergent: Rinse again until no suds remain, especially in the liner. Leftover detergent can make the mesh feel stiff and trap sand on the next wear. Squeeze gently; do not wring or twist the shorts.
- Air-dry inside and out: Lay the shorts flat or hang them in the shade with the liner pulled out so air reaches both layers. Turn them once partway through drying. Avoid direct sun and high dryer heat, which can stress stretch fibers.
- Check the liner is fully dry before packing: Feel the liner and waistband for dampness before the shorts go into a bag or drawer. Damp mesh is where odors start. If you are traveling, dry the shorts overnight before packing.
Product facts
- Harbormaster 2N1: The Harbormaster 2N1 Trunk has a quick-dry, 4-way stretch shell with a 5" inseam. A quick-dry shell sheds water fast, but it still needs a fresh-water rinse to clear salt and sand from the weave.

Harbormaster 2N1 - Harbormaster 2N1: The DropTemp® Cooling Hydro Mesh liner is Slim Fit with the BallPark Pouch® and a No-Ride-UpTM leg. The liner is the layer closest to your skin, so rinse and dry it thoroughly to keep its fit and support comfortable.
